EV vs CNG Cars – Best Option?

For some time, CNG cars have been a better option for buyers – for its lower running costs and lower upfront cost compared to diesel and petrol cars. But it hampers the performance and only comes with a manual gearbox (except Tiago & Tigor). Similarly, EVs also have lower running costs, but offer better performance (thanks to its torquey nature). However, its upfront cost is higher, and the charging infrastructure is in the developing phase. So, which car can be a better option? Let’s take a look at a comparison between the Tata Nexon CNG and the Tata Nexon EV.

In the above example, the EV model comes with an extra cost of Rs 2.32 lakh over CNG model.

EV vs CNG Cars – Service Cost

In the game of servicing, the EVs are the clear winners. In a CNG model, your maintenance costs will be higher due to engine oil, brake fluid, clutch, filters and other fluids. Additionally, the cost increases going forward if there is an issue with even a small part of the engine or gearbox. EVs don’t have any of these components, and also it comes with 15 year warranty (Nexon EV 45 example) – which means all major parts are covered till the life of the car.
Comparing between Nexon CNG and Nexon EV (home-charging)
| Cars | Total Running Cost Per km (fuel / electricity) | Maintenance Cost Per Year (average) | Running After 7 Years | Maintenance Cost For First 7 Years | Maintenance Cost Per km | Total Running Cost (fuel + maintenance) Per km | Total Cost After 7 Years |

Above mentioned figures are only a rough approximation
Over a 7-year ownership period, the Nexon EV finally overtakes the CNG version in total cost of ownership, saving you ₹37,136 in the long run.
